How to hire a reel editor: a step-by-step guide

6 min read · Updated 1 November 2026

In short: What a reel editor does, what to put in your brief, what to ask before you hire, and how to work together so your reels get watched.

What a reel editor actually does

A reel editor turns your raw clips into short vertical videos for Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and TikTok. The job is less about fancy effects and more about pace: cutting the dead air, opening with a strong hook, adding captions so the video works with the sound off, and ending with a clear next step.

Some editors also write the script or plan the shots. Others only edit. Decide which you need before you start looking.

Decide what you need before you search

Write down where the reels will run, their length, how many you need each month, and whether you will supply the footage. A business that posts three reels a week needs a different editor from one that wants a single launch video.

Collect two or three reels you like, ideally from your own industry. Examples save more time than any written description.

Judge the work, not the pitch

Watch at least five reels from each editor. Look at the first two seconds: would you stop scrolling? Check that captions are accurate and easy to read, the music suits the brand, and the cuts feel deliberate.

Prefer editors who have worked for businesses like yours. A great travel editor is not always a great real-estate editor.

Questions to ask before you hire

How many rounds of changes are included? Are music and sound effects licensed for business use? What is the turnaround for one reel and for a monthly pack? Will I get the project files? Who owns the final videos?

Agree these in writing, even in a simple email, before any work begins.

Write a brief the editor can act on

A good brief fits on one page: the goal of the reel, the audience, the main message, the call to action, examples you like, your logo and fonts, deadlines and the delivery format. Our guide to writing a creative brief has a template you can copy.

Start with a paid test

Before committing to a monthly pack, pay for one or two reels. It shows you how the editor communicates, takes feedback and meets deadlines. If it works, agree a monthly plan with a clear number of reels and revision rounds.
